They do not think about the thousands of lives they put at stake. What’s important is making money. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has virtually become a hotbed for touts. These touts have been responsible for getting more than 60 pilots licenses to fly commercial planes on the basis of fake mark sheets. And they are reason why the police are now looking into all the licenses issued during 2006 and 2009.
The Crime Branch of Delhi Police has arrested two more staffers of DGCA for allegedly helping people to obtain pilot licenses using forged documents, taking the total number of the arrests in this case to 13.
Mahan Jyoti Bhattacharya (37) and Mohammed K Ansari (42) were arrested in the Capital on Tuesday following the questioning of two pilots Abhishek Kaushik and Hiren Nagar. The two had claimed that these DGCA staffers have taken lakhs of rupees to provide them licenses.
Bhattacharya is an upper division clerk and a former state-level cricketer while Ansari is a draftsman posted in the finance section of the DGCA. They have reportedly made close to a crore in the scam.
According to police, the go-between the pilots and the DGCA officials was Eknath Patil, a peon in Indore, who later on went to become a flight supervisor at an Ahmedabad flying school. He prepared forged mark sheets and processed the commercial pilots licence (CPL) in exchange of R6-7 lakh each. He gave cuts to the two officials who got mark sheets forged.
“Ansari was in the CPL section between May 2006 and April 2008. Bhattacharya was also in the same section from June 2008 to December 2009. CPLs were issued to Kaushik and Nagar in these periods,” said Ashok Chand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
The police have till now busted two different rackets involved in procuring pilot licences using forged mark sheets. On March 26, Delhi Police had claimed have busted one such gang. A senior official of DGCA and three others, including a pilot, had been arrested.
